Choosing a first climber: a parent's guide

Choosing · 4 min read

Every climber we make gets the same question on WhatsApp: 'which one should I get?' The honest answer depends on three things — your child's age, your space, and your budget. Here is how we would decide.

Match the age

Under 12 months, you do not need a climber yet — a baby play gym does the developmental work of this stage. From around 1 year, the Pikler triangle is the classic first climber: low, stable, self-limiting, and usable for years. From 2 years, children who already climb confidently can go straight to a 4-in-1 or 7-in-1 jungle gym — slide, swing and rock wall included. Wall-mounted gyms suit 2 to 9, and the Playloft carries a family from 2 to 15.

Match the space

Be honest about your floor. A Pikler folds flat and disappears behind a cupboard. A jungle gym wants a permanent corner — roughly a bed-sized footprint once a slide is attached. If floor space is the constraint, a wall-mounted gym gives five activities on the footprint of a bookshelf. Measure before you fall in love.

Match the budget

Start where the money works: rings and a trapeze cost little and build the same upper-body strength as a big frame. The Pikler set is the best value-per-year in the range — a piece used from 1 to 6. Jungle gyms cost more because they are several toys in one; count what they replace before comparing prices.

The one-line answer

First child, first climber, normal room: start with the Pikler triangle set. You will know within a month whether a bigger gym is in your future — and every piece climbs the same way: sanded by hand, checked twice, signed with her name
