Play ideas · 4 min read
The best review we ever received was from a mother who said her Pikler had been 'a mountain, a garage, a tent and a jail' in one afternoon. That is the whole idea. Ten starters — your child will invent the rest.
For climbers (1–3 years)
1. Summit flag: a sock on the top rung; the game is to retrieve it. 2. The floor is water: cushions around the base, triangle is the island. 3. Postman: deliver a toy from one side to the other, over the top. 4. Follow the leader: parent's hand taps the rung the foot should find — early sequencing, disguised as a game.
With the ramp
5. Grand Prix: ramp down, cars racing — the classic. 6. Rock wall rescue: teddy stranded at the top, holds-side up. 7. The slide shop: every slide costs one 'coin' (bottle cap) — counting practice included. 8. Ball run: which ball rolls furthest from the ramp? A physics lesson without a word of physics.
With a blanket
9. The house: blanket over the frame, torch inside — instantly the best room in the home, and a reading den for the quiet hour. 10. Puppet theatre: blanket across one face, puppets over the top rung, audience on the rug.
The pattern
Notice none of these needed a purchase. Open-ended equipment plus household objects is the formula for play that lasts years — the triangle is the stage, and the stories change daily.
